Your Life Path Number is the most significant number in your numerology chart. It is calculated from your date of birth, describes your core purpose and natural tendencies, and remains constant throughout your life. Unlike name-based numbers, which can shift if you change your name, your Life Path is fixed. It is also the one number that produces the same result under both Pythagorean and Chaldean systems — because it comes from your birthdate, not your name.
There are 12 possible Life Path values: the single digits 1 through 9, and the three Master Numbers 11, 22, and 33. This guide covers all 12, the calculation method in full, and the related Karmic Debt numbers that can appear during the process.
The 3-Cycle Method
The correct calculation method for Life Path Numbers is the 3-Cycle Method. Many sources use a simple “add all the digits together” approach, but this method can miss Master Numbers that appear during intermediate steps. The 3-Cycle Method preserves those.
Step 1: Reduce your birth month
Reduce the month to a single digit. January = 1, February = 2, … September = 9, October = 10 → 1, November = 11 (preserve — Master Number), December = 12 → 3.
Step 2: Reduce your birth day
Reduce the day to a single digit or Master Number. 22 preserves as 22. 11 preserves as 11. All other two-digit days reduce normally (e.g., 29 → 2+9 = 11 → preserve as 11, or 17 → 1+7 = 8).
Step 3: Reduce your birth year
Sum all digits of the year and reduce. For 1988: 1+9+8+8 = 26 → 2+6 = 8. For 1994: 1+9+9+4 = 23 → 2+3 = 5.
Step 4: Add the three cycle values
Add your reduced month + reduced day + reduced year. If the sum is 11, 22, or 33 — stop. If it is anything else, reduce until you reach a single digit.
Worked example — born November 29, 1987:
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Month | November = 11 — Master Number, preserve | 11 |
| Day | 2 + 9 = 11 — Master Number, preserve | 11 |
| Year | 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25 → 2 + 5 | 7 |
| Life Path | 11 + 11 + 7 = 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 — Master Number, preserve | 11 |

Single digit Life Paths: 1 through 9
Life Path 1
The leader. Life Path 1 is driven, independent, and built for pioneering. You come into this life to develop self-reliance and original thinking. The challenge is learning to collaborate without compromising your directional clarity.
Life Path 2
The diplomat. Life Path 2 is sensitive, perceptive, and naturally gifted at building consensus. You are here to develop patience and the courage to hold your own perspective in the face of opposition. The shadow is over-reliance on external validation.
Life Path 3
The communicator. Life Path 3 is expressive, optimistic, and creatively magnetic. You are here to inspire and uplift through authentic self-expression. The central challenge is focus — learning to channel abundant creative energy rather than scatter it.
Life Path 4
The builder. Life Path 4 is methodical, reliable, and built for long-term construction — of systems, businesses, families, and institutions. You are here to master discipline and perseverance. The shadow is rigidity and resistance to necessary change.
Life Path 5
The freedom-seeker. Life Path 5 is adaptable, curious, and thrives on variety and sensory experience. You are here to embrace change and teach others that freedom and responsibility can coexist. The challenge is avoiding restlessness and overindulgence.
Life Path 6
The nurturer. Life Path 6 is caring, responsible, and oriented toward home, family, and community. You are here to develop service without self-sacrifice. The shadow is perfectionism and taking on others’ responsibilities at the cost of your own wellbeing.
Life Path 7
The seeker. Life Path 7 is introspective, analytical, and drawn to questions of deep meaning. You are here to pursue truth — whether through science, philosophy, or spirituality. The challenge is avoiding isolation and trusting others enough to share your inner world.
Life Path 8
The achiever. Life Path 8 is ambitious, strategic, and built for material mastery. You are here to understand how power and resources work — and to use them ethically. The shadow is an obsessive relationship with control or a sense that nothing is ever enough.
Life Path 9
The humanitarian. Life Path 9 is compassionate, idealistic, and globally oriented. You are here to complete a cycle — to serve, release, and contribute to something larger than personal gain. The challenge is the difficulty of endings and a tendency toward martyrdom.
Master Numbers: 11, 22, and 33
Master Numbers are double-digit values that carry amplified potential and amplified difficulty. They are not automatically “better” than single-digit Life Paths — they carry higher voltage, which means both greater capacity and greater risk of short-circuit.
When Master Numbers occur
A Master Number Life Path occurs when the sum of your three cycle values equals 11, 22, or 33 before any final reduction. If your calculation produces 44, 55, or higher, that is not a Master Number — reduce normally. The only preserved Master Numbers are 11, 22, and 33.
Life Path 11
Life Path 11 is the Master Intuitive. You have heightened sensitivity, visionary perception, and an ability to channel inspiration that others find uncanny. The 11 is the most common Master Number. Its shadow is anxiety, nervous intensity, and the difficulty of living up to one’s own potential. Many 11s oscillate between periods of extraordinary clarity and periods of paralysis. At the practical level, 11 carries the qualities of 2 (its single-digit root) combined with an amplified spiritual and intuitive layer.
Life Path 22
Life Path 22 is the Master Builder. You have the practical capacity to realise large-scale visions — the combination of 11’s idealism and 4’s concrete discipline. Life Path 22 is rare and carries immense internal pressure. The challenge is learning to work within systems and timelines rather than being crushed by the weight of one’s own ambitions. At the root level, 22 shares qualities with 4 but operates at a fundamentally different scale.
Life Path 33
Life Path 33 is the Master Teacher. This is the rarest of the three Master Numbers for a specific reason: a genuine Life Path 33 requires that all three cycle values — month, day, and year — each reduce to a Master Number or that the compound sum arrives at 33 without forced arithmetic. Many people whose birth dates produce 33 via the simple summation method are actually 6s (33’s root). The true 33 is oriented toward selfless creative service and the elevation of others through compassion and artistry.
Karmic Debt numbers
Karmic Debt numbers appear when specific compound numbers arise during your Life Path calculation — or in other core numbers — before the final reduction step. The four Karmic Debt numbers are 13, 14, 16, and 19.
13 (reduces to 4)
Karmic Debt 13 signals themes of laziness or avoidance of sustained effort. In past-life frameworks, this number indicates unfinished work. In practical terms, people with 13 in their Life Path often find that shortcuts backfire and that only consistent, unglamorous effort produces lasting results. The redemption of 13 is mastery through discipline.
14 (reduces to 5)
Karmic Debt 14 is associated with the misuse of freedom — overindulgence in sensation, irresponsibility, or taking liberties at others’ expense. People with 14 in their Life Path must learn to experience freedom responsibly. The gift, when that lesson is integrated, is genuine adaptability and a hard-won wisdom about what freedom actually costs.
16 (reduces to 7)
Karmic Debt 16 is considered the most challenging of the four. It is associated with ego destruction — the collapse of things built on shaky foundations. This can manifest as repeated disruptions to relationships, careers, or self-concept. The lesson is to build on integrity and to let go of ego-driven constructions before life dismantles them.
19 (reduces to 1)
Karmic Debt 19 is associated with independence pushed to isolation or self-interest at the expense of others. People with 19 in their Life Path must learn to accept interdependence and support without feeling diminished. The lesson is that true strength includes vulnerability.

Frequently asked questions
Can I have more than one Life Path number? No. Your Life Path is a single value derived from your birth date. You have exactly one.
What if my calculation produces a different result online? Many calculators use the simple digit-sum method rather than the 3-Cycle Method. This can cause them to miss Master Numbers. Use our Life Path calculator — it uses the correct 3-Cycle Method.
Are Master Number Life Paths better? No. They carry more intensity, not inherently more reward. Many people with single-digit Life Paths lead more fulfilled lives than those with Master Numbers.
Does my Life Path change if I was adopted and don’t know my birth name? Life Path is calculated from birth date only, so adoption does not affect it.
